When Computers Take Over
I consider myself an average person with average talents. However, I had always prided myself on my penmanship. I had beautiful handwriting. Until I suffered a stroke. Now my writing is barely legible. Thankfully I do not need to actually write much. But recently I have had to fill out and sign several documents. I was lamenting the fact that my handwriting is atrocious with a lady and we got to talking about how more and more schools no longer teach cursive writing. Everything is done on the computer nowadays. It got me to thinking. Which is a scary thing all on its own. How long will it be before our children are no longer taught how to write at all. Reports, essays and other homework is done with a computer. In this modern age of high tech, everything can be found online. After writing goes away, how long before math is no longer taught? By the same reasoning as writing is no longer needed, learning math is no longer needed. The math answers can be found online. All that is really needed to learn is how to use a computer and how to Google. I was sitting at my computer one day when my grandson called me with a fourth grade math problem he needed help with. Now you have to understand his fourth grade math is about the level that my high school math was. So instead of taking pencil to paper, I just Googled it. Up popped the answer in less than a second. So why learn math? Now don't get me wrong. I don't agree that this is the way it should be. I can just see it happening in the very near future. My fear is that one day, after all teaching is non-existent, there will be a major meltdown of all computers. Then no one will know how to do anything. We as a people will return to a primitive life. Having to learn how to do things from scratch. I sound like one of the old folks preaching gloom and doom! But it is a scary thought.
